Divine Chocolate Cake

This is such a delicious, easy and no-fuss chocolate cake! It is quick to whip up and your friends will think you have spent hours perfecting this recipe. 

I use this recipe to make a multiple layered chocolate cake or cupcakes.

Divine Chocolate Cake

1 cup sugar

1 3/4 cups all-purpose flour

3/4 cup cocoa powder

1 1/2tsp baking powder

1 1/2 tsp baking soda

1 tsp salt

2 eggs

1 cup milk

1/2 cup vegetable oil

2 tsp vanilla extract

1 cup boiling water


1/2 cup butter, room temperature

2/3 cup cocoa powder

3 cups of icing sugar

1/3 cup milk

1 tsp vanilla extract


1Heat oven to 180°C (350°F). Grease and flour two 9-inch round baking pans.

2In a mixer bowl, sift and mix together sugar, flour, cocoa, baking powder, baking soda and salt.

3Add eggs, milk, oil and vanilla; mix together for 2 minutes. On low speed, add in boiling water (batter will be thin). Pour batter into prepared pans.

4Bake 30 to 35 minutes or until wooden pick inserted in center comes out clean. Cool 10 minutes; remove from pans to wire racks. Cool completely. Frost with chocolate frosting.

Baking variations

  1. One pan cake: Grease and flour 13x9x2-inch baking pan. Heat oven to 180°C (350°F). Pour batter into prepared pan. Bake 35 to 40 minutes. Cool completely. Frost.
  2. Three layer cake: Grease and flour three 8-inch round baking pans. Heat oven to 180°C (350°F). Pour batter into prepared pans. Bake 25 to 30 minutes. Cool 10 minutes; remove from pans to wire racks. Cool completely. Frost.
  3. Cupcakes: Line muffin cups (2-½ inches in diameter) with paper bake cups. Heat oven to 180°C (350°F). Fill cups ⅔ full with batter. Bake 20 to 25 minutes. Cool completely. Frost. About 24 cupcakes.


  1. In a mixer, combine butter until soften. Add sifted cocoa powder and mix until fully combined. Alternatively mix icing sugar and milk, and combine until it becomes a spreadable consistency.
  2. Add vanilla essence, and mix for 30 seconds.
  3. Spread the chocolate icing between layers of cake, over top and side of cake.Serve
