Home-made Chocolate Cocoa Granola
This Homemade Chocolate Cocoa Granola is one of those recipes I love having prepared and ready in the kitchen. It’s crunchy, chocolatey and packed with rolled oats, coconut, almonds, pecans, cashews and pistachios, with just enough maple syrup to give it a little sweetness.
It’s also incredibly versatile. Serve it with milk for a quick breakfast, sprinkle it over yoghurt, add it to a smoothie bowl, or simply pack some into a container for an easy snack when you’re on the go.
I’ve served it with thick Greek yoghurt, homemade raspberry compote and fresh raspberries. I love the combination of chocolate and raspberry, the berries add a lovely tartness that balances the cocoa and chocolate chips, while the Greek yoghurt makes it creamy and satisfying.
Make a batch at the beginning of the week and store it in an airtight jar, and you have something ready for busy mornings, quick lunches or those moments when you want something sweet without having to prepare anything from scratch.

Ingredients Used for Home-made Chocolate Cocoa Granola
Granola
Rolled oats: Form the base of the granola and become crisp and toasted as they bake. Use old-fashioned rolled oats rather than quick-cooking oats, which have a finer texture and won’t produce the same crunchy result.
Unsweetened coconut flakes: Add natural sweetness, texture and a lightly toasted flavour. Larger coconut flakes work particularly well in granola because they retain their texture during baking.
Almonds: Add crunch and a slightly sweet, nutty flavour.
Pecans: Their naturally buttery flavour works particularly well with chocolate and maple syrup.
Cashews: Add a softer crunch and subtle sweetness that balances the more robust almonds and pistachios.
Pistachios: Add colour, texture and their distinctive nutty flavour.
Chia seeds or flaxseeds: Add additional texture and can easily be incorporated into the oat mixture without changing the overall flavour.
Unsweetened cocoa powder: Gives the granola its chocolate flavour without adding additional sweetness. Use a good-quality unsweetened cocoa powder for the best flavour.
Salt: A small amount balances the sweetness and enhances the chocolate and nut flavours.
Coconut oil: Helps coat the oats and nuts so they toast evenly and become crisp.
Maple syrup: Naturally sweetens the granola and helps bind the ingredients together as they bake, creating crunchy clusters.
Vanilla extract: Adds warmth and complements both the cocoa and maple syrup.
Chocolate chips: Added after the granola has cooled so they remain intact and provide little pockets of chocolate throughout.

Alternative Ingredients
Nuts: The combination of almonds, pecans, cashews and pistachios gives this granola plenty of texture, but you can use whatever nuts you have available. Walnuts, hazelnuts or macadamia nuts would all work well.
Seeds: Chia seeds can be replaced with flaxseeds, pumpkin seeds or sunflower seeds. Using pumpkin or sunflower seeds is also a good way to add extra crunch.
Coconut oil: Substitute with another neutral-flavoured oil if preferred.
Maple syrup: Honey can be used instead, although it will give the granola a slightly different flavour and means the recipe will no longer be vegan.
Chocolate chips: Use dark, milk or semi-sweet chocolate depending on how sweet you like your granola. Dairy-free chocolate can be used for a vegan version.
Coconut: If you don’t like coconut, simply leave it out and increase the rolled oats slightly.
Preparation Tips for Home-made Chocolate Cocoa Granola
- Use Rolled Oats: Old-fashioned rolled oats give granola the best texture. Quick oats are thinner and absorb the wet ingredients differently, which can result in a finer, less crunchy granola.
- Coat Everything Evenly: Mix the cocoa powder thoroughly through the dry ingredients before adding the coconut oil and maple syrup. Once the wet ingredients are added, stir until all the oats, nuts and coconut are evenly coated.
- Create Bigger Clusters: Once the granola is spread onto the baking tray, gently press it down with the back of a spoon or spatula. After stirring halfway through baking, press it down again.
- Most importantly, don’t stir the granola as it cools. Allowing it to cool completely on the tray helps everything crisp and stick together. Once cool, break it into clusters of your preferred size.
- Watch the Coconut and Nuts: Nuts and coconut can go from beautifully toasted to burnt quite quickly. Start checking the granola towards the end of the baking time, particularly around the edges of the tray.
- Add the Chocolate Last: Let the granola cool completely before adding the chocolate chips. If you add them while the granola is warm, they will melt into the mixture rather than remaining as individual pieces.
Serving Tips for Home-made Chocolate Cocoa Granola
- My favourite way to serve this chocolate granola is layered with thick Greek yoghurt, raspberry compote and fresh raspberries.
- The combination works particularly well because the yoghurt and raspberries balance the sweetness and richness of the chocolate. You can serve everything in a bowl or layer it in a glass for a simple breakfast parfait.
- It is also delicious served with cold milk, sprinkled over a smoothie bowl, or simply eaten by the handful as a snack.
- For entertaining at breakfast or brunch, serve the granola in a large jar alongside bowls of yoghurt, fresh berries, compotes and other toppings so everyone can assemble their own.
Storage Instructions
- Allow the granola to cool completely before storing. Any residual warmth can create condensation inside the container and cause it to lose its crunch.
- Room temperature: Store in an airtight container in a cool, dry place for up to 2 weeks.
- Refrigerator: Refrigeration isn’t necessary and can introduce moisture, which may soften the granola.
- Freezer: For longer storage, freeze in an airtight freezer-safe container for up to 3 months. Allow it to come to room temperature before serving.
Homemade Chocolate Cocoa Granola
Ingredients
- 3 cups rolled oats
- 1 cup unsweetened coconut flakes
- ½ cup whole almonds
- ½ cup pecan halves
- ½ cup cashews
- ½ cup pistachio kernels
- ¼ cup chia seeds or flaxseeds
- ⅓ cup unsweetened cocoa powder
- ¼ tsp salt
- ⅓ cup melted coconut oil
- ½ cup maple syrup
- 1 tsp vanilla extract
- 1 cup chocolate chips
Instructions
- Preheat the oven to 180°C (350°F) and line a large baking tray with parchment paper.
- In a large bowl, combine the rolled oats, coconut flakes, almonds, pecans, cashews, pistachios, chia seeds, cocoa powder and salt. Stir until the cocoa powder is evenly distributed.
- In a separate bowl, whisk together the melted coconut oil, maple syrup and vanilla extract. Pour the wet ingredients over the oat mixture and stir thoroughly until the oats, nuts and coconut are evenly coated.
- Spread the granola over the prepared baking tray in an even layer. Gently press the mixture down with the back of a spatula to help create clusters.
- Bake for 20–25 minutes, gently stirring halfway through. After stirring, spread the granola back into an even layer and press it down again. Keep an eye on it during the final few minutes to prevent the coconut and nuts from burning.
- Remove from the oven and leave the granola undisturbed on the baking tray until completely cool. It will continue to crisp as it cools. Once completely cool, break the granola into clusters and stir through the chocolate chips. Store in an airtight jar.
