alternative ingredients

Bread Base: Instead of a baguette, you can use other types of bread, such as ciabatta or sourdough, to create a unique texture and flavour for your bruschetta.

Zaatar Leaves: If zaatar leaves are not available, you can substitute them with fresh oregano or thyme leaves to maintain the herbaceous flavour.

Topping Variations: Feel free to customize the toppings based on your preference. You can add ingredients like chopped cucumbers, olives, or roasted bell peppers to add more variety and flavour.

Preparation Tips for Zaatar Bruschetta

  • Toasting the Baguette: Make sure to slice the baguette into 1/2-inch thick slices and toast them until they become crispy and golden, but not overly browned, to ensure a sturdy base for the toppings.
  • Marinating the Onions: Allow the sliced onions to sit with the sumac and olive oil for about 10 minutes. This allows the flavours to meld together and the onions to soften slightly.

Serving Tips for Zaatar Bruschetta

  • Assembly: Spoon the zaatar mixture onto each toasted baguette slice, ensuring an even distribution of the toppings. Garnish with additional herbs or a sprinkle of sumac for an extra pop of flavour.
  • Accompaniments: Serve the zaatar bruschetta as part of a mezze platter or appetizer spread. It pairs well with other Mediterranean dishes, such as hummus, tabbouleh, or grilled vegetables.

storage tips

Leftovers: If you have any leftover zaatar bruschetta, it’s best to consume it immediately to maintain the freshness and texture. However, you can store the leftover toppings separately in airtight containers in the refrigerator for up to 2 days. Reassemble the bruschetta before serving by toasting fresh slices of baguette.
