Basic Ingredients for Tarator Sauce

Tarator Sauce:

Tahini: Tahini is the star ingredient of Tarator sauce, providing a creamy and nutty flavour. It serves as the base for the sauce, adding richness and depth to the overall taste.

Lemon Juice: Lemon juice brings a bright and tangy element to Tarator sauce, balancing the richness of tahini and adding a refreshing zing.

Garlic: Garlic adds a distinct flavour and aroma to the sauce, enhancing its overall profile. It provides a savoury note and complements the other ingredients.

Water: Water is added to achieve the desired consistency of the sauce. It helps thin out the tahini and allows the sauce to drizzle smoothly.

alternative ingredients

Yoghurt: For a variation of Tarator sauce, you can substitute part or all of the tahini with plain yoghurt. This will create a tangier and lighter sauce with a different texture.

Herbs and Spices: To customize the flavour, you can experiment with additional herbs and spices. Consider adding parsley, dill, or cumin to bring unique dimensions to the sauce.

Preparation Tips for Tarator Sauce

  • Consistency: Adjust the amount of water added to the sauce according to your preference. For a thicker consistency, use less water; for a thinner consistency, add more water gradually until you reach the desired texture.
  • Mixing: When combining the ingredients, start by whisking the tahini with the lemon juice and garlic, then gradually add water. This will help prevent clumps and ensure a smooth and well-incorporated sauce.

Serving Tips for Tarator Sauce

  • Dips and Spreads: Sauce is perfect as a dip for fresh vegetables, pita bread, or falafel. It can also be spread on sandwiches or used as a sauce for wraps.
  • Salad Dressing: Drizzle sauce over salads to add creaminess and flavour. It pairs particularly well with crisp greens, cucumber, and tomato-based salads.
  • Grilled Meats and Seafood: Use sauce as a condiment or sauce for grilled meats like chicken, lamb, or beef. It also complements seafood dishes such as grilled fish or shrimp.

storage tips

Refrigeration: Store any leftover sauce in an airtight container in the refrigerator. It can typically be kept for up to 4-5 days.
